Dhanush and Vetrimaran once again hits the bulls’ eye! Their second film together Aadukalam is gutsy and a brilliant film. Dhanush is simply outstanding, his career best performance. It is also Sun Pictures best ever production, a film that they can be proud of.
What makes it tick are it is a story of ordinary people, told in a realistic way with human emotions about friendship, betrayal, jealousy, petty ego that leads to havoc in the life of a youth. The milieu and presentation are truly international.
The film is set in a suburb of Madurai where rooster or Cock fights is a major sport. Karuppu (Dhanush) is an understudy of Pettaikaran (Jayabalan) considered as the best in business. Karuppu thinks the world of his mentor, who prefers his other assistant Dorai (Kishore) more. Karuppu is an innocent good fella who falls for an Anglo Indian girl Irene (Taapasee) living in the nearby railway colony.
Pettaikaran most bitter foe is a policeman Retnasamy (Nareyn) whose family for years used to conduct and win trophies in cock fighting. Retnasamy decides to have one last cock fight between his team and that of Pettaikaran and emerge triumphant for the sake of his dying mother. The fight is conducted after a special permission is given by police and local bodies. In the crucial fight Retnasamy using drug induced rooster’s in the first round, trounces Pettaikaran. At this point to save the face of his guru Karuppu enters the fray with his rooster.
Pettaikaran is upset and announces through the mike that Karuppu is not a member of his team, but the underdog goes on to create the biggest upset. Karuppu’s victory makes his mentor bitter and jealous as he is crowned the new king of cockfights. This creates hidden animosity in Pettaikaran who plots for the downfall of Karuppu leading to a riveting climax.
Ultimately however, Aadukalam belongs to one man and one man alone. Investing in his character a lot of realism and protecting it from ever turning into a caricature, Dhanush delivers a performance that is arresting. The character conveys volumes through his eyes and Dhanush lives in the role of Karuppu. Jayabalan is a revelation as Pettaikaran and Kishore is outstanding as Dorai. Debutant Taapsee is a promosing find and she suits the character of an Anglo Indian girl to the T.
Technically, the film has many brownie points-The film's dialogues are sharp and mesh in well with the scenes. Velraj’s cinematography is one of Aadukalam’s greatest strengths; and even actors in bit roles leave a lasting impression.
A major plus is GV Prakash Kumar’s background score and the Yathe Yathe... song lingers in your mind even after you leave the theatre. The rooster fight in the interval point is the major highlight.
Minuses? It is too classy and difficult to comprehend for an ordinary viewer. The first half is very racy and entertaining while the second half towards the climax drags and some characters like Retnasamy disappear in the second half.
Every once in a while comes a film touch both heart and mind; films that make you surrender completely to the power of the experience. Aadukalam lives up to the expectation that the film carried and the credit goes to Vetrimaran whose research and hard work shows on screen. We recommend Aadukalam.

Vijay's Kaavalan, directed by Siddique is an entertaining one. The movie had a good start and hopes a good move. It is the remake of malayalam bodyguard but the director has changed some parts of screenplay according to tamil audiences taste & especially for Vijay fans. Director has worked out well to balance the movie for both Mass & Class Audiences. This is the 2nd movie from Vijay-Siddique's combination & 3rd one from Vijay-Asin and is a good one with a humorous background.
Vijay(Bhoominathan) is very much fond of goondas right from his childhood. He loved to take risks and to be brave always. He starts learning to become a brave goonda by becoming a bodyguard for famous anti socials. Sometime later, he decides to become the bodyguard of a wealthy and powerful man Rajkiran. He achieves his luck after saving Rajkiran from a danger. Vijay thus becomes the bodyguard of Rajkiran's only daughter Asin. Vijay follows Asin to her college as her Bodyguard. Asin and her friend Mithra Kurien gets irritated with him following them all day.
The two girls started making fake calls to Vijay's number, trying to get rid off him. Asin is the girl who calls him telling she is very much in love with him and all those stuffs. At first things goes smooth but later on it gets into serious issues. What happens next deals with the climax.
Vijay, Asin and Vadivelu have done their roles quite well. Vadivelu who stays with bodyguard vijay as a servant will makes us to laugh through out the film. As usual vijay's rocking dance performance continues in kaavalan too. Step up, Sada sada & Vinnai kappan are rocking with vijay's screen presence. Pattampochi song is type of a yesteryear's melody. Vidayasagar has scored good music for the film and also visuals by Ekambaram is excellent.
After years vijay has comes out of his masala formula, kaavalan is a family entertainer. The climax lights to one in Kuch kuch Hota Hai. Kaavalan Will Be A Super Hit Movie Of this Pongal. Vijay Rocks in Performance.

Siruthai Story
Rocket Raja (Karthi) is a smalltime pick pocket but he is good at heart. He along with Kaatu Poochi (Santhanam) both of them makes their daily bread and butter by cheating people in a petty way. Rocket Raja falls for the charm of Tamannah. But life brings in a bad twist in the form of a small girl who calls him dad. Rocket Raja gets shocked with the sudden twist. To his surprise, he gets voluntary support from police officer (Rajiv) played by Rajeev Kanakala. Rajiv always comes in the rescue of Rocket Raja from that point of time. One fine day Rocket Raja will be attacked by a bunch of goons. He turns utterly clueless. Here comes the sudden appearance of honest IPS officer Ratnavel Pandian (Karthi). Who is this Ratnavel Pandian? Why are the goons after Rocket Raja? Who is the real father of the small girl? Watch it on big screen for the plot.
Performances:
Karthi: Siruthai stands as best film of Karthi at his early stages of career. He performed outstandingly in both the roles of Rocket Raja and Ratnavel Pandian. Ratnavel Pandian brings a new style in this role, while Rocket Raja is funny and entertains the masses ultimately and is highlight of the film.
Tamannah: Tamannah looked very attractive in this film. She did really well in mass romantic scenes with Karthi. Especially in the climax scene her performance is good. Her act in this film looked very much developed compared to her earlier films. In teh whole movie she is seen in typical traditional outfits like gaghras and half sarees.
Others: The small girl Baby Rakshana performed superbly. Supreet excels in the role of the main villain. His costumes, makeup and his voice made him look like giant. Rajiv Kanakala’s performance is up to the mark and his dialogue delivery is perfect. Santhanam’s comedy tracks are superb and have brought the house down. Manobala’s typical role of villain’s sidekick is good.
